Botox Or Dermal Fillers: Which Option Is Right For You

If you’re discouraged by lines, wrinkles, and an overall sunken appearance in your face, don’t worry. Many products, such as injectables, can address these problems. Best of all, they’re minimally invasive and require little, if any, downtime.

If you’re battling wrinkles or volume loss in your face, you may be a candidate for Botox® or dermal fillers. But which one is the best fit for you? See our quick guide below — and if you’re ready for the transformative results that Botox and fillers can provide, be sure to come see us.

A bit of background on Botox and dermal fillers

Botox is actually made from Botulinum toxin, a natural substance that is produced by bacteria. Amazingly, researchers discovered that it could be used in small doses to safely and temporarily paralyze facial muscles that, when overused, cause wrinkles.

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, actually plump up wrinkles when injected underneath your skin. There are many fillers on the market, containing everything from synthetic materials to cow collagen.

Here at Radiance MedSpa DC, we use a collagen gel-based filler called Bellafill that, once injected, serves as a foundation that your own collagen builds upon. We’ve had great success with it.

Both Botox and Bellafill are:

There are differences between them too, and learning about them prepares you for working with our clinicians to determine which is the better option for your needs.

Similarities and differences between Botox and dermal fillers

Though both Botox and dermal fillers are administered via facial injection to treat wrinkling and loss of volume in your skin, they offer solutions for different problems.

Botox does a great job at smoothing crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, frown lines, and the lines between your mouth and nose. You need to get your treatments about every few months in order to ensure that your results continue.

Unexpected benefits from Botox have also been discovered, from migraine relief to soothing an overactive bladder.

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, improve your look by adding volume to smooth wrinkles — the ones around your mouth and nose (as opposed to between them, as Botox does). The results you get from fillers last much longer (up to five years for Bellafill).

Fillers also make your lips fuller and plump up the area below your cheekbones, which can look hollow as you get older. Fillers do a great job minimizing your acne scars as well, if they’re a nuisance to you.
